ORIGINAL TECHNIQUE

Royal Powder Brows

A permanent makeup powder technique
developed in Brussels.

A pixelated powder shading technique built for skin types where conventional powder brows fail to heal evenly — combination, oily, and mature skin. Developed by Ioana Vărzaru, refined over years of client work, and now part of every advanced PMU course taught at her Brussels studio.

THE TECHNIQUE

What Royal Powder Brows is.

Royal Powder Brows is a permanent makeup brow technique that creates soft, pixelated shading across the entire brow surface — graduated from a defined tail to a feathered front. The result reads as natural-looking enhanced brows: the kind of finish that looks like polished daily makeup rather than tattoo work.

It belongs to the powder brows family of techniques, but differs from conventional ombre and standard powder brows in how it's executed and how it heals — particularly on the skin types where most powder methods underperform.

Unlike microblading, which deposits pigment in linear hair-like strokes, Royal Powder Brows uses a machine-based pixelation method to deposit pigment as fine, dotted shading. This makes it suitable for clients who can't get clean results from microblading — including oily skin, mature skin, and skin with previous PMU work.

HOW IT DIFFERS

How Royal Powder Brows differs from conventional powder methods.

Most powder brow techniques work well on dry to normal skin and struggle on combination, oily, and mature skin. The pigment either fades unevenly, blurs at the edges during healing, or loses its graduated effect within the first few weeks. Royal Powder Brows was developed to address these specific failure points.

01 — Layered pigmentation protocol. A specific layering approach during the procedure designed to optimize how the pigment settles into different skin types during healing.

02 — Skin-adaptive depth control. Depth and pressure are adjusted based on how the skin responds during the work, rather than applying the same machine settings across all clients.

03 — Healing-predictable execution. The technique prioritizes the healed result at week four — not the fresh look on day one. This means the work is calibrated for what stays, not what shows immediately.

WHO IT IS FOR

Who Royal Powder Brows is for.

Royal Powder Brows is technically suitable for most clients seeking a permanent brow solution, but it shines specifically on skin types where conventional methods underperform.

Best suited for

  • Combination and oily skin — where traditional ombre tends to blur during healing
  • Mature skin — where conventional microblading lines fade unpredictably
  • Clients with previous PMU work — where the existing pigment limits hair-stroke options
  • Sensitive skin — the pixelation method is gentler than continuous-line techniques
  • Clients who want a polished "daily makeup" look rather than hyper-realistic hair

Not the best fit for

  • Clients who specifically want a hair-by-hair hyperrealistic look (Hairstroke is the better technique)
  • Very thin or sparse natural brows where shape needs to be built from scratch (combination approach may work better)
  • Clients with conditions affecting pigment retention (autoimmune, certain medications) — requires individual assessment
HEALING JOURNEY

The Royal Powder Brows healing journey

Like all permanent makeup techniques, Royal Powder Brows goes through a multi-week healing process before the final result is visible. Understanding this journey helps both artist and client set realistic expectations.

  1. DAY 01 — IMMEDIATELY AFTER

The brows appear darker and more saturated than the final result will be (approximately 30–50% deeper). The skin shows mild redness around the worked area. A protective ointment is applied to support healing.

  2. WEEK 01 — INITIAL HEALING

The pigment forms a light surface layer that begins to flake naturally. The brows may appear patchy or uneven during this phase — this is normal and expected. Avoid picking, scrubbing, or applying makeup to the area.

  3. WEEK 02–03 — THE "GHOST PHASE"

Many clients become concerned at this stage because the brows appear significantly lighter, sometimes seeming nearly invisible. The pigment is settling deeper into the skin. This phase resolves naturally.

  4. WEEK 04 — FINAL RESULT EMERGES

The brows return to a balanced, settled tone — typically 30–40% lighter than the day-one saturation. This is the final healed result, ready for evaluation and any minor touch-up if needed.

  5. WEEK 06–08 — TOUCH-UP APPOINTMENT

A complimentary touch-up at this point ensures color uniformity and corrects any small areas that healed lighter than intended. After the touch-up, the result is set.

  6. 12+ MONTHS — MAINTENANCE

Royal Powder Brows typically lasts 18–36 months before fading enough to require a refresh. Maintenance frequency depends on skin type, sun exposure, skincare products used, and individual metabolism.

Frequently asked questions about Royal Powder Brows

How long does Royal Powder Brows last?
Royal Powder Brows typically lasts 18–36 months before requiring a refresh, depending on skin type, sun exposure, skincare products, and individual metabolism. Combination and oily skin tend to fade slightly faster than dry to normal skin.
Is Royal Powder Brows painful?
Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain. A topical numbing cream is applied before and during the procedure to minimize sensitivity. Pain tolerance varies by individual.
How is Royal Powder Brows different from microblading?
Microblading deposits pigment in linear hair-like strokes using a manual blade. Royal Powder Brows uses a machine to deposit pigment as fine pixelated shading across the brow. The result is softer, more uniform, and typically more durable on combination, oily, and mature skin.
How is Royal Powder Brows different from ombre brows?
Standard ombre brows create a graduated effect from a darker tail to a softer front, but use a more uniform shading approach. Royal Powder Brows uses a specific pixelation and layering method designed to maintain its graduated effect through healing, particularly on skin types where conventional ombre blurs.
Can I get Royal Powder Brows over existing PMU work?
It depends on the existing work. If the previous PMU is significantly faded and the underlying shape is still suitable, Royal Powder Brows can often be applied directly. If the existing pigment is too saturated or the shape needs adjustment, a removal session may be recommended first.
How much does a Royal Powder Brows treatment cost?
Treatment pricing is set by individual artists trained in the technique. As an artist trained in Royal Powder Brows, you set your own pricing based on your market and positioning. Training pricing is listed in the courses where this technique is taught.
Can I learn Royal Powder Brows if I'm just starting out in PMU?
Royal Powder Brows is taught at advanced level. New PMU artists should complete a foundation course (Formation de Base) first, then return for the advanced training where Royal Powder Brows is included.
